My only wish is that the leaderboard went deeper a few hundred more blogs and more highly factored in those that provided commentary on the breaking news (that’s what I click on when I visit Techmeme) - the overfocus on a few mega blogs is ultimately not healthy - not Gabe’s fault but a problem area.

OSHA Issues Guidance on the Selection and Use of Slings for Handling and Moving Materials

The new guidance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will help employers select and use the appropriate slings when handling and moving materials. The document, Guidance on Safe Sling Use, was released today by the agency. OSHA's current general industry standard is more than 30 years old, said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA, Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. This guidance document will aid users in the safe selection and use of slings, including synthetic round slings, which are not covered in OSHA's standard, as well as the newer grades of materials being used in alloy steel chain and wire rope slings. OSHA adopted its general industry sling standard on June 27, 1975, based on ANSI B30.9-1971 Slings standard. OSHA has since made only minor corrections. OSHA issued its construction industry sling standard on February 9, 1979, and its sling standard for shipyards on April 20, 1982.

The Food and Drug Administration is alerting health care professionals and consumers to concerns over the use of Fentora (fentanyl buccal) tablets after recent reports of deaths and other adverse events. Fentora, a potent opioid pain medication, is used only for treatment of breakthrough pain in cancer patients receiving opioid treatment and who have become tolerant to it. Breakthrough pain is intense increases in pain that occur with rapid onset, even when opioid pain-control medication is being used. Patients who take narcotic pain medications daily and around-the-clock develop tolerance and are more resistant to the dangerous side effects of these medications than patients who take narcotic pain medication on a less frequent basis.

I’m here in the lobby of the hotel in Denver where the first ever Search Marketing Expo Local and Mobile show is being held. I’m thrilled to be here to see the creation of Chris Sherman and Greg Sterling! Karen Deweese was here to greet me with a great big hug and is hard at work making last minute preparations. It’s so great to see Karen, I had not seen her since last December! The SMX complimentary Internet is already up and running to. This rocks! I’m looking forward to this cozy and focused show, it’s going to be awesome.

I haven’t been to Denver in a long time, it’s such a wonderful city. It’s a gorgeous day without a cloud in the sky. So much clean, wide open space with those mountains teasing you to want to drive your rental car westward and forget why you are here! It’s a city I certainly wouldn’t mind living in someday if I was asked to.

Quality Associates Wins Major FDA Contract

Quality Associates, an established provider of services and solutions for document management, imaging and archiving, announced that it has been awarded a new contract with the Food and Drug Administration. With the contract, Quality Associates will digitize, index and consolidate approximately 20 million pages of documentation and materials at over 20 FDA facilities across the United States. Work on the five-year, $20 million project will begin immediately. The documentation relates to investigations and inspections conducted by the FDA. Currently, the documentation exists in print, electronic media such as CDs, and in their original form, such as product packaging. When complete, authorized FDA personnel will be able to search for and access specific documentation housed in a comprehensive digital document archive.

One in Six Employees Lies to Cover up Errors at Work: Survey

A new survey from enterprise content management company, TOWER Software, reveals that one in six (16%) employees lies to cover up mistakes that have resulted from the wrong version of information being presented to colleagues, management, suppliers and/or customers, because of poor computer file management. The report, Document Mayhem in the UK and Republic of Ireland reveals that 67% of employees at middle manager or below think people in their organisation might have unknowingly presented the wrong version of information in this way, with 10% saying that the information was then re-used elsewhere. According to the independent survey conducted for TOWER Software by Dynamic Markets, 35% of men are embarrassed by these mistakes compared to just 13% of women.

Biomarin Pharmaceutical announced that it has filed an investigational new drug application with the US Food and Drug Administration for its PEG-PAL drug, a treatment for a genetic disorder known as PKU. The US company, which is listed in Switzerland, said it expects to initiate a clinical study of PEG-PAL (Poly Ethylene Glycol-Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyase) in patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) in the first quarter of 2008. The phase I study will assess the safety and pharmacokinetics of single injections of PEG-PAL in approximately 35 PKU patients in a series of escalating dose cohorts, it said.

MiFiD: 50% say regulators slipping on guidance

With less than 100 days before the 1 November deadline many financial services firms are unhappy with the support they are receiving from their national regulators as they prepare for the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, found a survey by SunGard and TradeTech. Half the 300 respondents stated that their national regulators were either “bad” (32%) or “very bad” (19%) in helping them to get ready for the directive.



In the UK, respondents were divided on whether the Financial Services Authority’s minimal guidance, principles-based approach to MiFID was a good one – only 54% believed that this is “the best approach to prevent regulatory overload”, with the remaining respondents stating that this approach “makes it difficult to understand exactly what requirements the FSA desires, adding to the compliance task”.



The survey showed an overall increase in MiFID readiness – 53% of respondents now believe their preparations for the directive are “ahead” or “right-on-track”, compared with just 34% in September 2006. However, opinions are still divided on whether MiFID will have a positive impact. The majority (54%) of institutions surveyed state that they see MiFID as just “another piece of compliance”. In addition, only 42% of respondents believe that MiFID will be good for Europe’s economy in the next 5 – 10 years, with over a third still undecided.

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and Onyx Pharmaceuticals announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a supplemental New Drug Application for Nexavar (sorafenib) tablets for the treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or liver cancer. Nexavar, an oral anticancer drug, is the first approved systemic therapy for liver cancer and the only one shown to significantly improve overall survival in patients with the disease. Worthington Industries Safety Program Reduces Serious Injuries by 44 Percent

Worthington Industries announced the first-year results of its safety management program, Safe Works, which include a 44 percent reduction in serious injuries (OSHA Days Away, Restricted or Transferred), 22 percent reduction in total injuries (OSHA recordable) and 31 percent reduction in number of workers compensation claims, which resulted in $1.2 million in workers compensation cost savings. Tentative EU-US Deal on SWIFT Data

European Union governments have reached a tentative deal with the United States clarifying how it will use data it receives from Belgian-based bank transfer consortium SWIFT in anti-terror investigations, diplomats said Wednesday.



The deal is aimed at ending a trans-Atlantic battle on privacy rights in the hunt for terrorists, and would close a legal black hole over the status of a data transfer deal SWIFT signed with U.S. authorities after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.



The new draft agreement would bind the U.S. to use SWIFT data strictly in anti-terror investigations, the diplomats said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.



Other uses of the data would have to meet conditions set by European data protection officials, they said.



The deal was being finalized as part of an exchange of letters between Washington and EU government envoys in Brussels. The draft was approved Wednesday by EU nations, and was expected to receive final approval Thursday.

Customers Tend To Buy The Who, Not The What

Recently, an associate made an astute and intriguing

observation, one that captured my immediate attention. He

stated that “most customers buy the who (us) not the what

(products) that they can easily buy from anyone.” What a

statement of fact! That is such an important distinction

and a lesson well worth additional discussion and

remembering. Why would anybody want to buy from just anyone?

While most salespeople represent a company’s product line,

ranging from pharmaceuticals to cleaning products, they are

typically not the owner of the company. They do however,

represent that company, sharing their brand image and

reputation in the marketplace, whether good or bad.

Customers tend to see salespeople, not the companies they

work for. From a customer perspective, salespeople are

often synonymous with their employer. Their individual

identity often fades into the background.

The superior salesperson is continuously aware of the

critical importance of nurturing customer relationships in

their daily selling efforts. These salespeople strive to

expose their own identity, their own brand, in addition to

their employer’s presence. They inject themselves into the

process, making a personal investment in the selling

experience. By cultivating relationships with their

customers, salespeople endear themselves to their customers

as dependable and valued resources. In this manner,

salespeople become indispensable.

The Director of Real Estate and Workplace Services/HQ Properties, NorCal is responsible for the delivery of all aspects of real estate development, transaction management, project management and workplace services (office management) for all Google offices located in the Northern California. This position will liaise with company leadership to establish an overall strategic facilities plan and execute the plan within the framework of the global real estate plan, budget and service delivery methodology. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Real Estate and Workplace Services.

Responsibilities:

* Responsible for overseeing all aspects of Google’s new building program in Northern California.

* Responsible for all aspects of transaction management within the region; site selection and lease negotiation.

* Responsible for all design, tenant build outs, and facility management within the region.

* Responsible for the delivery of all workplace services within the region including building operations, reception and mail services and office management.

* Develop detailed operating budgets for each office within corporate performance metrics and manage each line of service within established budgets.
